SAN FRANCISCO — In light of the recent injuries to Jeff Samardzija and Madison Bumgarner, the San Francisco Giants are designating Jarrett Parker for assignment to make room for Derek Holland on the major league roster, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

After signing with the Giants on February 13, Holland came to spring training as a non-roster invitee, and competed with Ty Blach and Chris Stratton for one of the back-end spots in the rotation.

Over 15 innings of work in Arizona, Holland went 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA with 18 strikeouts, which was second only to Stratton (25) and Bumgarner (30). He will start against the Oakland A’s in his final game of spring training on Monday night before starting the third game of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 31.

As for Parker, he struggled mightily this spring. Although he hit three home runs, Parker batted only .220 and led the team with 20 strikeouts. If he clears waivers and isn’t picked up by another team, Parker will have to return to Triple-A Sacramento. However, there’s no guarantee that he’ll stay in the organization.
