SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants beat the Oakland Athletics 3-0 on Tuesday night to close out Spring Training, but the most important part of the night came after the game had ended when Bruce Bochy made some major announcements about the team’s Opening Day roster. Let’s run down the most important moves the Giants made Tuesday night.

Usual starters Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija will start the 2018 campaign on the disabled list. Those two spots cleared the way for pitchers Pierce Johnson and Roberto Gomez to make the team.

Pierce Johnson is one of the most interesting stories coming out of Spring Training. Johnson was part of the first round of Spring Training cuts the Giants made, but pitched so well in minor league camp he was brought back up to big league camp. He continued that performance in big league camp, and he’ll be heading to Los Angeles with the team for Opening Day.

Kelby Tomlinson also won the job for utility infielder. He beat Josh Rutlidge for that job.

The Giants will start the year with five outfielders. Along with starters Hunter Pence, Andrew McCutchen and Austin Jackson the Giants will bring Gregor Blanco and Gorkys Hernandez to Los Angeles to start the season.

That means promising outfielder Steven Duggar will start the year in AAA with Sacramento.
