SAN DIEGO — Before starting their four-game series against the San Diego Padres on Thursday evening, Bruce Bochy gave an update on three injured players — Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, and Mark Melancon.

“We’re hoping that he’ll be okay to go,” Bochy said about Cueto. “We’re going to test it, though, by doing some things with him. Saturday, he’s going to throw to hitters here. So, we’ll have a better idea on whether he’ll be ready for Tuesday.”

On April 10, the Giants placed Cueto on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained ankle, an injury he suffered while working out over the weekend. In his place, Andrew Suarez made his major league debut, where he held the Arizona Diamondbacks to four hits, four runs, and struck out seven through 5.1 innings.

At first, Cueto’s injury didn’t appear to be a major issue.

Now, there’s a chance he will miss his next start, which will come on April 17 against the Diamondbacks.

“I don’t want to give an estimate,” Cueto said. “It still hurts when I throw and I’m concerned about committing to Tuesday and possibly getting hurt more.”

Bochy went on to give “updates on the other guys. Shark is pitching on Saturday in San Jose. We’ll take him up to 60 pitches there. Will Smith has thrown today.

“Melancon, who went to see Dr. Andrews today, had a stem cell procedure this morning. It’s about a two week recovery, in that area, before he starts throwing.”
