Kyle Shanahan takes hard line on Reuben Foster in first public comment on court case

SANTA CLARA – This time last year, draft analysts across the country were applauding the San Francisco 49ers for moving up in the draft to take star linebacker Reuben Foster. Since then, the Alabama product has taken the team on an emotional roller coaster.

After a season that earned Foster a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team, he was charged with three felonies related to a domestic dispute in February. On Tuesday the woman who accused Foster of hitting her recanted her allegations.

Kyle Shanahan spoke publicly on Foster’s situation for the first time Thursday night during media availability following the 49ers first round draft pick.

“We can promise you guys if there’s someone who ever hits their significant other, their girlfriend, something like that, that person’s not going to be on our team,” Shanahan said. “I feel strongly about that. I know John (Lynch) does. I know our ownership does. And that’s how we feel about it.

“Obviously Reuben is on our team right now. So we’re waiting to see how that goes. But if that’s something we felt he did, or ended up happening, you guys will see how we feel.”

With Foster’s uncertain future with the team, a linebacker would have made sense for the 49ers with the 9th pick in the first round. Lynch was asked on Wednesday if Foster’s court case had any impact on the team’s draft process.

“We considered linebackers throughout this process, because there were some very good ones in this draft,” Lynch said. “Ultimately, Matt (Maiocco), we came to the decision that McGlinchey was the guy we wanted at our spot.”
