DeMarcus Cousins on rehabbing his Achilles: “The healing part is over, it’s just about building strength”

DeMarcus Cousins made perhaps the splashiest move of the 2018 NBA free agency period when he agreed to sign with the Warriors for the mid-level exception and try to rehab his Achilles while positioning himself to win a championship and re-establish his long-term value.

Cousins met with the Bay Area media Friday at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and shared some thoughts about his rehabilitation from the Achilles tear he suffered with the New Orleans Pelicans during the 2017-2018 season.

“It’s coming along great,” Cousins said. “The healing part is over, it’s just about building strength. I’m improving each and every day, I’m getting stronger each and every day and it’s just a matter of time before I’m back on the court.”

He noted that while he hoped to return for training camp, he has consulted with the Warriors coaches and will not rush himself back

“I was aiming for training camp but communicated with the staff and the coaches,” Cousins said. “It’s kind of up in the air so it’ll be when I’m ready, 100-percent ready and we’ll take it from there.”

Cousins also felt the depth of the Warriors made his rehab easier since he would not have to rush back.

“It is one of the luxuries of joining this team, so it’s a positive for me,” Cousins said.
