Bochy looks to future of Giants young pitching: ‘These guys are only going to get better’

SAN FRANCISCO — Dereck Rodríguez and Andrew Suárez have been revelations for the Giants since their arrivals from Triple-A Sacramento in 2018. The two rookie starters have pitched their way into full-time rotation spots and impressed Giants personnel and fans alike.

Their early success has manager Bruce Bochy hopeful about their ability to contribute for the club in both 2018 and for years to come.

“You saw last night,” Bochy said about Friday’s night game. “I mean, we needed a good pitching effort, and we got it from Rodríguez. We didn’t win the game, but you look at the job that Suárez did in Colorado. Now those kids, they’re just doing a terrific job. And it’s nice to know we have this kind of depth in our system. But also, you look at the future. You have these guys throwing the ball like this, and they’re only gonna get better with more experience. So that’s our deal. We gotta pitch and catch the ball, and those two are throwing as well as anybody.”

Behind Rodríguez, the Giants snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals. In Suárez’s last start against the Colorado Rockies, he conceded just one run in seven innings as the Giants fell 1-0. Suárez has an ERA of 3.92, but has yielded two runs of fewer in each of his last five starts. Rodríguez, meanwhile, has compiled a 3-1 record with a 3.09 ERA in eight starts.
