SAN FRANCISCO – Before Monday’s series opener between the San Francisco Giants and the visiting Chicago Cubs, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said his star catcher will not participate in the 2018 All-Star Game.

Instead, Buster Posey will undergo an injection to help keep the swelling down in his right hip. It’s an injury that he says has been bothering him for a while now.

“It’s kind of one of those things that’s off and on throughout the year,” Posey said. “It’s hard to quantify anything like this, you know? I think a lot of guys have stuff that bugs them. Again, it’s hard to say. It’s one of those things that some days is better than others. Try to have more good days than not.”

Posey and the Giants will play the Cubs on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then finish the week with the 4-game Bay Bridge Series. Posey is scheduled to have the injection following Sunday’s game against the Athletics.

“Hopefully with this injection get this thing to calm down and clear up,” Bochy said before the game. “He’s been playing with it. You can tell, all of you can tell. It’s bothered him and he’s been a warrior through this. He has missed some time earlier, he missed two or three days. The break will serve him well.”

Despite the injury, Posey was in good spirits after his team completed a walk-off win against the Cubs. So much so, that he had a little fun with a reporter who asked if he’d be sticking around the Bay Area for the break.

“Why are you asking?” Posey replied, barely holding back a smile as he stared the reporter down. He finally broke after a few moments, finishing with, “Yes I am.”
