In the midst of a subpar season, the Giants may be facing their toughest news yet. According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, catcher Buster Posey is likely to need season-ending surgery on a right hip that has bothered him this season.

The news comes in a season where Posey has struggled for the power he’s normally had in seasons prior. Nick Hundley replaced Posey behind the plate while Posey sat today against the New York Mets.

According to Shea, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said discussions are ongoing.

“I’ll be honest with you, we have discussed that,” Bochy said about potential surgery. “We talked about it. Nothing’s been determined yet. Because we want him ready for next year. We’re discussing that now.”

According to Bochy, any surgery would address the issues Posey is facing with his labrum and attempt to clean out bone spurs.

Earlier in the season, Posey was held out of the All-Star game in order to protect his hip and extend his rest. He received a cortisone injection in his hip during the break, but it appears it either did not make enough of a difference in helping Posey, or the Giants’ recent struggles have elevated his future health as a priority over his availability for the rest of the year.
