Bochy details hip injury that shut down Buster Posey

Buster Posey’s season-ending hip surgery has been a long time coming. His right hip has bothered him all year and on Monday, Posey will go under the knife in Vail, Colorado.

The decision to sideline Posey is one that Giants manager Bruce Bochy said was independent of the team’s performance.

“It came to a point, whether you think you’re in it or not, we have to get him right, get him healthy,” Bochy said. “I know he’s looking forward to getting this behind him and we expect him to be full go next year.”

The skipper also talked about the injury’s effect on Posey.

“I think he showed what a warrior he was battling through this all year and having to deal with the injury,” Bochy said. “No question, it affected him. He needed more days off. But the fact is we have to get this done and get him right for next year.”

Bochy said Posey will be available tonight off the bench against the Rangers, adding that Nick Hundley will likely see the bulk of playing time in Posey’s absence. Aramis Garcia will be called up and Bochy said he will also get some chances behind the plate.

“I think Nick will help Garcia as far as mentoring him and when he catches, he’ll be there to help us work with him,” Bochy said. “He’s going to get his time. He’ll get a chance to get some playing time. You’re talking about a guy who doesn’t have that much time in Triple-A, so as long as Nick is fine and good to go, he’s going to get a lot of playing time. He’s done a great job for us, he deserves this.”
