Bumgarner discusses umpire warning after hitting LeMahieu

SAN FRANCISCO – Saturday night the Giants picked up a win against the Colorado Rockies in a 3-0 shutout. Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner threw six innings with his regular fervor and focus. However, his reputation for his passion on the mound sometimes gets him in trouble where he may have not intended.

Bumgarner had raised tensions after hitting D.J. LaMahieu in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the inning, Rockies starter German Marquez hit Evan Longoria with an 86mph changeup to load the bases. Home plate umpire Roman DeJesus quickly issued warnings to both benches.

Bumgarner commented on the incident after the game.

“Yea, I mean it probably looked bad but there was definitely no intent from me behind the rubber, we were just trying to get in with a fast ball and it ended up hitting him.” Bumgarner said.

Shortly after the pitch Bumgarner walked off the mound and explained to LaMahieu and the Rockies dugout he had not intended to hit him. However, he did fully expect that his reputation would land him a fine regardless.

“I mean I’m sure the league’s going to assume I did.” Bumgarner said. “It seems like every time I throw inside I have a fine the next day for hitting somebody. But no, regardless of what they do or don’t do, I didn’t hit him on purpose.”

Bumgarner was frustrated that the warning was called at all and implored the umpires understand the context of the play more.

“That’s part of the game. Then to see the other guy get hit with, I don’t know if it was a slider or changeup, but I feel like you have to have a better feel for the game.” Bumgarner said.

“The umpires to throw out warnings, I mean whatever, if there’s warnings there’s warnings, but neither one of them….if a guy throws 97 mph he’s not going to try to hit somebody with a 86 mph slider, I think everybody in here knows that so I feel like you have to a little better feel.”
