Chris Shaw robbed of home run robbery by fan

In the bottom of the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s game, the Giants led the San Diego Padres 3-2. Hunter Pence had driven in all three runs and Derek Holland looked poised to secure a two-run outing.

Holland started off the inning by walking A.J. Ellis before securing an out. Then, Franmil Reyes stepped up and dug out a low offspeed pitch, ripping it to left field. Giants left fielder Chris Shaw tracked the ball the whole way, backing up to the wall, carefully preparing to try and rob the home run to be.

As Shaw leapt toward the ball, he looked like he might be able to rob it. But his glove was blocked by a fan who caught the ball, leaving Shaw incensed and the Giants challenging the home run. It appeared at least part of the fan’s arm came into the field of play, but it was not enough to see the call overturned, and the Padres took a 4-3 lead.
