With Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season with a torn ACL, the 49ers are looking at all their options. While head coach Kyle Shanahan has expressed a vote of confidence in backup quarterback C.J. Beathard, potential reinforcements are being assessed.
Minutes after the news of Garoppolo’s injury was confirmed, Matt Maiocco revealed that the 49ers will work out former Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage.
The #49ers are bringing in veteran backup QB Tom Savage for a workout, reports @Schultz_Report. The Saints cut him on Sept. 1. Nick Mullens, of course, remains an option to be promoted from practice squad to serve as C.J. Beathard’s backup.

Savage was with the Texans in 2014, 2016 and 2017, when he played a combined 13 games with nine starts. This season, he’s been with the New Orleans Saints, but has not played a game. He has five passing touchdowns and seven interceptions in his career.
