Ex-49er says some players smoked marijuana before Harbaugh-era games

With a growing number of states across the country decriminalizing and legalizing marijuana, the drug has been discussed as a alternative to painkillers for NFL athletes – with many former players advocating for it’s use.

You might also assume that some of those players would use the drug before those bumps and bruises take place. According to a fantastic article by Phil Barber of the Press Democrat, you’d be correct.

Barber met with former 49ers linebacker Nick Moody, who said his pregame routine included smoking weed to take the edge off before games.

“I feel like my best games were when I was highest,” he told Barber. “It kind of kept me from overthinking stuff.”

Moody refused to give other names, but said there were a group of players who would all get high before suiting up. Moody missed four games for the 49ers because he tested positive for the drug.

Barber points out that it’s important to note Moody is now a partner with CLC Brand Labs, a fast growing marijuana production operation located in Desert Hot Springs, California.

Moody was drafted by the 49ers in the sixth round of the 2013 draft. The Florida State alum played four games in his rookie year for Jim Harbaugh, but missed most of the year after he broke his hand. He played one more year in the red and gold, recording 21 tackles in the 16 games he played that year.

Moody had brief stints in Seattle and Washington D.C., but has been out of the league since late 2016.
