Richard Sherman says Nick Mullens is playing like ‘top-half’ NFL quarterback

(For Sherman on Mullens start from beginning)

Nick Mullens mania continued on Sunday.

The second-year quarterback put together another impressive performance in the 49ers’ 26-23 OT win over the Seahawks, going 20-of-29 for 275 yards and a touchdown while posting a quarterback rating of 110.6. It marked the third time in his first six career starts that Mullens has posted a QB rating over 100.

A number of 49ers veterans were effusive in their praise of Mullens, but none more than Richard Sherman, who said that Mullens is playing like one of the top 16 quarterbacks in the NFL.

“Nick Mullens has stepped up to the moment week in and week out, and he’s shown he can play in this league,” Sherman said. “I just hope we can keep him. Because I mean teams need a quarterback. This guy’s not just playing ‘oh conservative football, oh man get the ball in the right places,’ he’s making the right decisions, he’s making good throws under pressure.

“I’d say he’s playing like a top-half quarterback in this league. You’ve got guys that are out there right now that are not playing better football than Nick Mullens, and he could be a starter for a lot of teams in this football league. We appreciate that we have him and he’s playing his tail off for us.”

Mullens, 23, is under contract through next season, but is likely to generate some interest on the trade market, considering he’s owed just over half a million dollars in 2019. C.J. Beathard, a third-round pick in 2017, is under contract through 2020, but is no longer owed any guaranteed money after this season.
