Baggarly predicts what Giants’ opening day outfield will look like

As the offseason continues to drag along with little movement, fans are becoming more impatient by the week.

Farhan Zaidi and the Giants have yet to add any impact players to their roster this offseason. Specifically, they haven’t made any additions to their outfield, after entering the offseason without a single proven veteran.

Giants beat writer Andrew Baggarly joined Murph & Mac on Monday to talk about the latest news surrounding the Giants and gave his take on what he thinks the outfield will look like come opening day.

“I think it’s going to be Steven Duggar and two people not on the 40-man roster, two people who are not currently in the organization,” Baggarly said.

Because the Giants have not acquired any major league level outfielders so far this season, some combination of Duggar, Chris Shaw, Austin Slater, and Mac Williamson would be the starting outfield if the season started today.

Last season the Giants began the year with Austin Jackson in center field, before letting him go and calling up Duggar to play alongside Gorkys Hernandez. Duggar’s season ended early due to an injury in a late August game where he tore his labrum and ended the last month of the season on the disabled list. Before getting injured, Duggar hit .255 with two home runs and seventeen RBI’s in 152 plate appearances while playing in only 41 games in 2018.

“I don’t believe any of them will come to camp as incumbents, I’ll put it that way. Now if they have a great spring or somebody gets hurt, you never know what will happen.

“If Farhan does what he intends to do, he’s going to get two outfielders who will be the opening day starters at both corners, that would be my prediction”.

The remaining crop of free-agent outfielders includes names such as Bryce Harper, Marwin Gonzalez, Adam Jones, Carlos Gonzalez, and others, but Farhan Zaidi might go the trade route to acquire his starting outfielders for 2019.
