Yes, you read that correctly. The #LetPabloPitch movement has returned just in time for their May 11th “Let Pablo Pitch” bobblehead giveaway.
During the bottom of the eighth inning in a 12-4 blowout against the Cincinnati Reds, Sandoval took to the mound in a major league game for the second time in his career. The first – a story embedded in Giants lore – ended in Sandoval pitching a scoreless inning against the Dodgers in April of last year.
Things started a bit rocky when Sandoval plunked José Peraza, sending him to first. But that was all the drama that would ensue. Sandoval got Josh VanMeter to fly out and Nick Senzel to hit into a inning-ending double play.
Now that he has two pitching outings under his belt, let’s check in on Sandoval’s career numbers. At the time of posting, he’s at two innings pitched, zero hits allowed, zero runs allowed, zero walks, and zero strikeouts. Pretty good. Hall of Fame numbers if you ask us.
It was a busy day for Sandoval at Great American Ball Park. In the second inning Sandoval stole third base after reaching on a throwing error earlier in the frame, his first stolen base since 2012. He also put three runs on the board in the 6th inning when he took Descalfani deep to right center with a 427-foot shot.
At the end of the day, his contributions weren’t enough to overcome a day where the Giants gave up 12 runs on 14 Cincinatti hits, but it’s the random and unexpected quirks of the sport like these that keep us coming back for more.
