Duggar triples over Puig, scores two to tie game vs. Reds

SAN FRANCISCO – Saturday night the Giants got off to a rough start, as starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija gave up three runs in just the first 19 pitches of the game. The team who is starting to garner a reputation for bad starts proved once again how tough the first couple innings can be for them.

In the bottom of the first inning however, Even Longoria responded with a solo home run to alleviate the damage, but true relief didn’t come until the bottom of the fourth. Steven Duggar, with Brandon Crawford and Kevin Pillar on and no outs, cracked a ball to right field that avoided the glove of Yasiel Puig by mere inches. Though Yasiel Puig was quick to recover the damage was done. Duggar had knocked in two runs with a triple as Pillar narrowly avoided the throw to home.

The Giants have struggled all season long to avoid early deficits, giving up 50 percent (91 -183) of all runs within the first four innings. They have particularly struggled in giving up runs early on in hitter friendly parks, as they gave up 19 first-inning runs in their road series against the Reds and the Rockies.
