Farhan Zaidi responds to Holland’s criticisms of front office

SAN FRANCISCO – Derek Holland made clear his frustration with the moves that the Giants’ front office has been making. President of Baseball Operations, Farhan Zaidi, responded to Holland’s concerns Sunday morning.

After a rough outing in Colorado, Holland’s future in the starting rotation had become unclear. As the Giants offense started to click, their pitching had started to slide. On Saturday night after their loss to the Reds at Oracle Park, Holland was informed that he would be used in the bullpen in long relief. Holland did not take the news well and after the game made his frustrations known.

“To be honest, I have no idea what they’re doing. I don’t mean that by Boch and them, it’s more from the front office,” Holland said. “We keep changing a lot of things, I did a fake injury, so I’m not happy about that. But at the end of the day, I’m going to do whatever they ask me to do.”

Both Bruce Bochy and Zaidi reached out to Holland after his comments to clarify some of his statements and listen to his concerns.

In a piece by Henry Schulman, Zaidi went on record saying that Holland did in fact suffer the injury he alleged was fake and that the misunderstanding came from the degree of severity. Sunday morning, Zaidi doubled down on this sentiment.

“I mean, you know, a lot of times you’re dealing with gray areas with injuries,” Zaidi said. “Maybe he thinks he can perform, maybe he thinks he can go out there, but what kind of results are you going to get? What kind of performance you want to get?”

Zaidi overall was shocked at Holland’s comments and that he called out the front office specifically since he feels that players should feel comfortable coming to him about any concern or frustrations.

“I think every organization would like to create an environment where guys feel comfortable talking about their concerns in house and to the extent guys don’t feel comfortable that’s on me,” Zaidi said. “Maybe I haven’t been around as much as I should be or haven’t been as accessible as much as I should be.”

Zaidi empathized with fans and player frustration saying that making this team better is at the forefront of his mind every day.
