Mac Williamson, despite his struggles, was a fan and team favorite on the Giants. He was admired for his attitude and approach, as well as his work ethic and commitment after returning from a season-ending concussion last year.

His numbers, unfortunately, were terrible. His eight strikeouts over a two-game span coupled with a .118 batting average sealed his fate, and he was designated for assignment on May 25 after 15 games with the team. Williamson had the option to return to the Giants’ minor-league system, but as a player with more than three years of service time in the majors, he declined and elected free agency instead.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after Saturday’s 8-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles that while he was disappointed that things didn’t work out with “Mac” within the organization, he’s pulling for him to succeed in his career.

“I’m pulling for Mac,” Bochy said according to Alex Pavlovic. “I wish him the best. He came up as a Giant and unfortunately it didn’t quite work out like he hoped or we hoped, but I think he has good baseball left. Sometimes a change of scenery can do a lot of good.”
