Madison Bumgarner lifted early after taking comebacker off arm

Madison Bumgarner tried to ignore the welt, but the Giants wouldn’t.

The Giants star was removed before the third inning Saturday against the Cardinals after taking a comebacker off his left (pitching) arm in the first.

The Giants announced he had an elbow contusion, and X-Rays were negative.

Bumgarner came out to the mound to warm up for the third, but Bruce Bochy and Giants trainer Dave Groeschner trailed him and, after a short discussion, Bumgarner walked off to loud applause at Oracle Park.

Bumgarner had taken an at-bat in the frame earlier, wearing a sleeve on the area. He struck out.

Jose Martinez, the second batter of the game, hit a 98.3-mph comebacker off Bumgarner’s arm, leaving a welt just above his elbow. The ball caromed to third baseman Pablo Sandoval and Martinez got in safely. Bochy and Groeschner checked on Bumgarner, who threw a couple warmup pitches and kept on tossing, eventually striking out Dexter Fowler to escape the inning.

After the third out, Bumgarner went down the tunnel and talked with Bochy, but he was back on the mound in the second inning. It didn’t last, and Sam Dyson entered.
