Will Smith — yes, him — hits goofy two-RBI single to give Giants cushion

He entered the league in 2012.

It was a long wait, but his first plate appearance was worth it.

Will Smith, in the game after recording the first two outs of an attempted five-out save, stepped to the plate against Phillies reliever Nick Pivetta in the eighth at Oracle Park. It was more than a funny visual.

Smith swatted a single to right, scoring two to put the Giants up, 9-6. He was nearly thrown out at first but the throw from right drew Rhys Hoskins off the bag.

He arrived at first with a hearty laugh because what else could he be doing?

Smith even found himself in scoring position as Joey Rickard hit an RBI double on the next play, leaving Smith, now at third, laughing just as hard as when he was standing on first. He didn’t get the opportunity to score, but he took the mound with a chance to record the win in the ninth.
