Giants minors updates: Jaylin Davis goes off again, and this is getting silly

Triple-A Sacramento 10, Reno 13 (Diamondbacks). The River Cats are 65-59.

Star: Jaylin Davis: There were options for a team that finished with 15 hits, but the streak Davis is on is nuts. Brought over in the Sam Dyson trade, Davis went 3-for-4 with a walk and two more home runs, making it five in two days.

His two weeks worth of games must have the Giants debating just how they can get him his major league shot faster; Davis is not yet on the 40-man. He’s slashing an impossible .404/.500/.962. In all this year, he has 33 homers in 418 at-bats, an OBP of .405 plus nine steals. The only number that may worry the Giants is 124 strikeouts.

Double-A Richmond 2, Harrisburg 1 (Nationals). The Flying Squirrels are 45-78.

Star: Caleb Barajar. The ninth-round pick in 2016 has moved steadily throughout the ranks, making it to Richmond in May. After a rough start to his Double-A career, he’s putting things together. The 25-year-old, a Michigan native, went seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight. That’s now 14 consecutive innings without letting up a run. The lefty is making himself a 2020 option.

High-A San Jose 3, Inland Empire 7 (Angels). The Giants are 55-79.

Star: David Villar. The 11th-round pick a year earlier has been solid wherever the Giants have placed him. Villar, a third baseman out of the University of South Florida, went 2-for-4 with a run scored, his average up to .272 with 13 home runs in 99 games.

Low-A Augusta 0, Greensboro 7 (Pirates). The GreenJackets are 66-57.

Star: Trenton Toplikar. The Riverside product started his season flopping between starting and relieving with San Jose. Last month, the Giants moved him to Augusta to build up his arm as a starter, and he’s pitched better. Saturday, the 2018 sixth-round pick went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, two walks and two strikeouts. The righty lowered his ERA as an Augusta starter to 3.38 in seven games.

Short-Season Salem-Keizer 8, Eugene 0 (Cubs). The Volcanoes are 36-25.

Star: Brandon Martorano. It was a perfect day for the catcher, who went 3-for-3 with a walk, a double and sacrifice. Martorano, a 16th-round pick this year out of North Carolina, didn’t last long in the Arizona League and has performed with Salem-Keizer, now slashing .284/.380/.448 with three home runs in 20 games.

AZL Giants Black 2, AZL Athletics Gold 0. The Giants are 22-27.

Star: Grant McCray. The third-round pick this year, out of high school in Florida, has not looked overmatched early, going 3-for-4 Saturday and improving his slash to .256/.378/.308. The 18-year-old outfielder doesn’t have much pop yet, but he does have speed, swiping 12 bases in 41 games.

McCray, by the way, is the son of Rodney McCray, the former big-league outfielder best known for this:

AZL Giants Orange 6, AZL Cubs 3. The Giants are 39-10.

Star: Jesus Gomez. The 18-year-old lefty out of Venezuela has begun to separate himself. Gomez, in his second year in the system, threw six innings and allowed two runs on five hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. In his past two outings, he has 16 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. He’ll have to cut down on walks, having issues 21 bases on balls in 50 innings.

DSL Giants 5, DSL Pirates 3. The Giants are 29-37.

Star: Luis Matos. Another good day for the No. 25 prospect out of Venezuela. Matos, a 2018 international signing, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk, the center fielder boosting his slash to .362/.430/.570. He now has a 12-game hitting streak in which he’s 18-for-47 (.383).
