Carl Yastrzemski’s first pitch to Mike is another really special moment

It’s hard to remember when a catch between a grandpa and grandson meant more to the game of baseball.

The Red Sox snuck in another Yastrzemski moment to open Wednesday’s Day Two of the Fenway Park series, having Carl throw to a crouching Mike for the ceremonial first pitch.

The legendary Red Sox outfielder still has it, making it on the fly to the Giants’ 29-year-old rookie.

A night prior, Mike played left field, actually turning a double into a single by playing it off the Green Monster so nicely. Any Red Sox fan of a certain age will tell you no one played balls off that wall like his grandfather.

And while Carl hit 452 career dingers, Mike hit his 20th — and first at Fenway Park — in the fourth inning.

Carl, who is not at Fenway Park often these days, reportedly wasn’t there to see it, letting his grandson have the spotlight. He watched Mike’s first plate appearance Wednesday from the Boston dugout, seeing Mike draw a walk.
