Larry Baer discusses how he got Tim Lincecum to return to Oracle Park

The biggest story on Sunday was Bruce Bochy. But it was close.

That’s because arguably the most beloved Giants’ player during Bochy’s tenure, Tim Lincecum, made his return to San Francisco after leaving in 2015.

Though rumored for a few weeks, Lincecum’s presence was a surprise, if only because the former two-time Cy Young award winner can be almost impossible to get ahold of. After a brief cameo with the Angels in 2017, Lincecum has been mostly AWOL, to the point that there have been stories written about his whereabouts.

But the Giants weren’t about to let that happen on Sunday, and neither was The Freak.

“With Timmy we had a couple of helpers,” Larry Baer told KNBR’s Bonnie-Jill Laflin postgame. “Guys that he’s texting with. And I won’t tell you who they are or else we’ll give up our sources.

“The thing with Timmy is he was really respectful. He knew it was Bochy’s day, so he wanted to be respectful to Boch, but he didn’t want it to be about him. But I thought he struck a great balance. He’s a wonderful guy. He’s around — in and out of San Francisco a fair bit — so hopefully we haven’t seen the last of it.”

Based on how awesome his return was on Sunday, let’s hope not.
