On Friday, the 49ers lost starting weak side linebacker Kwon Alexander for the season with a torn pectoral muscle. The team expects Alexander to have season-ending surgery to repair the tear some time next week.

Alexander has been a crucial part of the 49ers’ defense, and it could be argued he was as important an offseason addition as either one of Dee Ford or Nick Bosa. He created the confident identity of the linebacking corps as the “Hot Boyzz”—a reference to rapper Lil Wayne’s early rap group—and established a standard and energy in the locker room with his phrase “legendary.” It is near impossible to have a conversation with Alexander in which he doesn’t use the term, something he says is a mechanic he utilizes in wanting to be better than just “good.”

Following the news, Alexander posted the following message to Twitter, which reads:

“I’m built for this shhh! It’s all part of the game! I sacrifice everything when I step in between the white line! Ima be Legendary! Everything happens for a reason! I’ll be back ‼️”
