Say the words “tails” out loud. Now say the word “heads” out loud. Now mumble both. Do they sound similar? NFL referee Alex Kemp seemed to think so on Monday night when the Seattle Seahawks and 49ers had their overtime coin toss.
The video above appears to show that Seahawks backup quarterback Geno Smith called “tails” on the coin toss. Kemp heard Smith’s call and said, “Your call is heads.”
The coin landed on heads, allowing the Seahawks to receive the kick. Per overtime rules, a touchdown automatically ends the game. While the 49ers did have a chance to win the game in overtime following Dre Greenlaw’s interception of Russell Wilson, it appears they should have had the ball to begin with.
