Giants hitting coach finds another job very far away

You can officially add hitting coach to the long list of Giants needs.

Alonzo Powell will not be returning to the Giants after two seasons in charge of the team’s batters. He won’t be returning to this country at all, becoming the new batting coach for the Chunichi Dragons in Japan’s Central League, the team announced Monday. Powell starred for Chunichi from 1992-97.

The 54-year-old San Francisco native was hired off the Astros’ staff after the 2017 season to lead a group of aging hitters who haven’t quite hit. He had been in coaching limbo since Bruce Bochy retired and the Giants didn’t hire a manager until last week, when Gabe Kapler was the choice. He, Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris will have to find a new batting coach.

Already the Giants watched as Matt Herges, their bullpen coach, became Arizona’s new pitching coach. Bench coach Hensley Meulens also reportedly will join Miami’s coaching staff.

The one sure coaching holdover will be Ron Wotus, back as Giants third-base coach.
