The 49ers released a statement on Saturday afternoon, following news of the death of C.J. Beathard’s brother, Clayton, 22, who was stabbed outside of a Nashville bar early Saturday morning. The 49ers announced that C.J. is not with the team for Saturday’s game vs. the Rams, and has traveled home to join his family.

Here’s the statement in full:

“The 49ers family was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragedy involving C.J. Beathard’s younger brother, Clayton. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to C.J. and the entire Beathard family as they cope with the unthinkable loss of a loved one. C.J. has traveled home to join his family knowing he has the support of our entire organization as they grieve the passing of Clayton.”

Paul Trapeni III, 21, was also fatally stabbed during the altercation.

“The fatal stabbings appear to have resulted from an argument over a woman that began inside Dogwood Bar and then turned physical when the parties went outside,” the Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed in a press release.

“Multiple persons were involved in the outdoor fight during which the two men were both fatally stabbed in their sides. Beathard, of Thompson Station, and Trapeni, of Franklin, were both transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where they died. A third stabbing victim, a 21-year-old man, was treated and released.

“Midtown Hills Precinct detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the man in the attached surveillance photo who is being sought for questioning in the fatal stabbings. Anyone who recognizes him from the attached photo is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.”
