49ers catch big break as Browns pass on Robert Saleh

Every NFL head-coach opening is filled, and Robert Saleh is still employed by the 49ers.

It appears the rising, well-respected defensive coordinator will remain with the organization after the Browns on Sunday reportedly decided upon Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski as their next head coach.

The optics on the choice are curious; Saleh’s unit thoroughly dominated Stefanski’s in Saturday’s 27-10 San Francisco win, leading the Vikings to head home and the 49ers to prepare for next weekend’s NFC Championship against either the Seahawks or Packers. But Cleveland must have been sold on Stefanski prior to the matchup.

So many teams are searching for an innovative offensive mind, which may hurt Saleh, who has captained the San Francisco defense for three seasons. This year the 49ers had the best defense in football in terms of yards per game.

The Browns reportedly liked Saleh, but obviously not enough — which Richard Sherman, who has stumped for Saleh and has said he deserves a head-coach job, took note of.
