More than a year ago, Jimmy Garoppolo’s season was ended on a freak run down the left sideline. Garoppolo’s torn ACL effectively ended the 49ers’ season, too, and was one of the darkest days for a franchise that saw plenty over the last four years.
After that game, as Garoppolo was heading out of the stadium on a cart, Mahomes tracked him down to console him and wish him well.
Mutual respect was shown between Mahomes & Garoppolo last year after the #49ers & #Chiefs game, after Jimmy’s rough day. |

“I didn’t even know Pat at the time,” Garoppolo said Thursday. “For him to come out of his way after the game and wish me luck and everything, just a real class act. The guy’s awesome on the field, off the field. He does it all… For him to do something as simple as that, it went a long way.”
The two played each other again in Kansas City in the third game of the 49ers’ preseason schedule this year, but next Sunday’s Super Bowl will mark the first matchup in a season matchup since Garoppolo tore his ACL in 2018.
