In the aftermath of a devastating 31-20 Super Bowl LIV loss, the 49ers looked up at the Chiefs one more time.

In the odds for the 2021 Super Bowl, San Francisco is not favored and not even second in the running, their 8-1 odds, as per CaesarsEntertainment, being third best in the NFL to win next year’s big game.

Kansas City, which will return Patrick Mahomes, who figures to terrorize the league for so many years to come, is favored to repeat at 6-1 odds. Lamar Jackson’s Ravens crept ahead of the 49ers at 7-1, with the Saints (11-1), Patriots (14-1), Steelers (15-1) and Packers and Cowboys (18-1 each) filling out the top of the list.

WagerTalk was slightly kinder to San Francisco, listing it tied with Baltimore for second-best odds at 8-1. But still, the Chiefs at 5-1 are the odds-on favorites.

The 49ers have tried to keep together a team that rolled through the playoffs until Sunday’s fourth quarter, when Kansas City ran off 21 straight points to shock Kyle Shanahan’s group. Shanahan, GM John Lynch, Jimmy Garoppolo and defensive coordinator Rob Saleh all will be back to try to avenge a devastating runner-up finish.
