PEORIA, Ariz. — Heliot Ramos’ spring-training high immediately preceded his low.
After hitting a home run Friday in his first start with the big-league camp, the top outfield prospect was diagnosed with a mild left oblique strain suffered on a throw to home plate, the Giants announced Sunday.
Ramos will be treated this week and reevaluated next weekend, at which point the Giants expect to have a timetable for his return.
It’s been a roller-coaster start to spring for Ramos, who was surprisingly not invited to major league camp. His buddy and co-star prospect, Joey Bart, spoke up and said he deserved to be there in the hours after Ramos showed off his bat and arm Friday.
The 20-year-old center fielder ended last season with Double-A Richmond and already had his eyes on the majors, saying last week he hopes to debut “this year — as soon as possible. Whatever [the Giants] want.”
He left an immediate impression on his manager.
“It’s a pretty solid all-around tools package, right?” Gabe Kapler said Friday. “Big, strong kid, arm with carry, power, the ability to look over the baseball. He’s fast.”
