SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A promising bullpen candidate has been lost for the season.

Matt Carasiti, a 28-year-old righty who has pitched all over, including Japan, since being drafted by Colorado in 2012, will undergo Tommy John surgery Monday, the Giants announced. Carasiti injured his right elbow Thursday against Cleveland.

The non-roster invite had impressed in the early going, striking out the side against the Dodgers in his first look in the Cactus League. He was solid until his appearance against the Indians, in which he allowed two runs in a frame.

Carasiti has appeared in 30 games in MLB, 19 with the Rockies in 2016 and 11 last season with Seattle. He was another project of the Giants’ pitching minds, who stripped down his repertoire to focus on his four-seam fastball and splitter.

“I think I’ve learned a lot about myself. Had a lot of downs and not so many ups. Haven’t really gotten a chance somewhere. I feel like this is a good spot,” Carasiti said two weeks ago. “All the crap that I’ve gone through up to this point is culminating with me hopefully becoming the pitcher I should be.”
