The Packers caused a great deal of controversy by selecting a quarterback, Jordan Love, in the first-round of last month’s NFL Draft, despite the fact that they have Aaron Rodgers, and a team that made it to the NFC Championship last year.

On the surface, it certainly seems like a move that could cause a rift between Rodgers and the organization. During the schedule release on Thursday, Rich Eisen and Steve Mariucci asked former 49ers quarterback Steve Young if he felt scorned when San Francisco drafted Jim Druckenmiller to be his successor in 1997.

Not quite.

“No!” Young said while laughing. “Because I went out for the first practice and watched Jim throw and I was like ‘I’m fine, we’re good, we’re good.’”

While it may be harsh, it seems absolutely plausible considering Drukenmiller’s body of work. Drukenmiller made the top spot on our “49ers Biggest Draft Busts of All Time” list for good reason. The No. 27 overall pick completed just 40 percent of his passes in six career games, with one touchdown and four interceptions.

Interestingly, Young was himself brought in as the successor to Joe Montana, something he feels pushed both players to be their best.

“We never argued, we never crossed words. The fact is, the 49ers got the best of us. It was a circus, but in the end if you look back, you say, ‘Joe never played better, I never played better.’ They got the best of us. I’d say in that way it’s creative tension.”
