Gabe Kapler could not confirm or deny one of the legends of his diet.

The famously fit Giants manager, according to the mythical story that the Mercury News published in January, as a college baseball player once peeled the skin off all 40 of his chicken nuggets from McDonalds. He only wanted the meat.

When relayed the tale on “Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks” on Monday, Kapler started laughing.

“I’m laughing because these stories are so great. It sounds like me. Wouldn’t shock me,” Kapler said.

If he doesn’t remember the story itself 20-plus years later, he acknowledges he was a weird eater.

“What I do remember is thinking from a health perspective, a Chicken McNugget was better than a Big Mac,” Kapler said on KNBR. “It was such silly … the banter that I had in my own mind as a 20-year-old or as an 18-year-old, it’s so far from the truth. The one thing I’ll say is I admit to having strange eating habits at the time. So it doesn’t shock me or surprise me at all.

“… The things that I thought were healthy at age 20 are certainly not the things I think are healthy anymore.”
