Whether you agree with his opinion or not, it would appear Saints quarterback Drew Brees has caused a rift in his own locker room.
In an interview clip that has social media buzzing, the former NFL MVP said the following regarding players kneeling during the national anthem:
“I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.”
Brees went onto say that when he hears the national anthem, he envisions his two grandfathers who served the country during World War II, and that standing for the anthem represents unity.
The comments did not go over well with many of Brees’ peers.
“He’s beyond lost,” Richard Sherman wrote on Twitter. “Guarantee you there were black men fighting along side your grandfather but this doesn’t seem to be about that. That uncomfortable conversation you are trying to avoid by injecting military into a conversation about brutality and equality is part of the problem.”
More concerning for Brees was the response from his top two receivers, including the recently signed Emmanuel Sanders.
