There is immediate disappointment in news of an injury, as was the case Thursday. Deebo Samuel will undergo surgery following a Jones fracture on his left foot following a throwing session with teammates in Tennessee. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who first reported the news, said that Samuel, whose surgery will be done by Dr. Robert Anderson, will return to play in 12-16 weeks, which takes him through the end of training camp.

Following the news, Samuel responded on Twitter with a slightly shorter timeline and some on-brand optimism.

Samuel missed just one regular season game in his rookie year — in Week 6 against the Washington Redskins due to a groin strain — playing 67 percent of the 49ers’ regular season snaps, and starting in all three playoff games. In his 18 games, he caught 67 passes for 929 yards and three touchdowns, along with 261 rushing yards on 20 carries with three touchdowns. He is the clear No. 1 receiver on the depth chart.
