Farhan Zaidi did say he didn’t want to lose anyone from the Giants’ backyard.
Robert Emery is staying home. The St. Ignatius Prep graduate and University of San Francisco catcher has signed with the Giants, announcing it as part of an Instagram story Wednesday. The Bay Area News Group first reported the signing.
Emery, who becomes the sixth known undrafted free agent to land with the Giants, is 6 feet, 215 pounds and twice was named to the Buster Posey Award watch list for the best catcher in college (a title won by Patrick Bailey this year). He transferred from Dartmouth to USF after his freshman season and has starred the last two seasons. Before this year was cut short, he was slashing .381/.451/.540 with a pair of home runs in 17 games.
Emery could have gone back to college, a graduate-transfer who last month signed to play at Arkansas, but the Giants were able to persuade him into turning pro. After the Giants drafted Bailey, NC State’s catcher, with their first-round pick, Zaidi suggested the organization’s depth at catcher needed some work.
Whenever minor leaguers can get some work in, Emery will fall into a system that is top-heavy with Posey, Joey Bart and Bailey and has the 21-year-old Ricardo Genoves, who’s reached Class-A.
Prior to Emery, Giants had agreed to deals with NC Central’s Carter Williams, Illinois’ Ty Weber, Camas High School’s Tyler Forner, Pepperdine’s Wil Jensen and Alabama’s Brett Auerbach.
