Former Giants and current Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Leake has elected to sit out the shortened 2020 season, and is the first known player to do so. Leake’s agent made the announcement in a statement on Monday.

“This was not an easy decision for Mike,” Leake’s agent, Danny Horwits, said in the statement. “He wishes the best of luck and health for his Diamondback teammates this season and he’s looking forward to 2021.”

Though the specifics are unclear, it was implied that family concerns were the primary reason for Leake’s decision to sit out. Leake, 32, was scheduled to make $16 million for a full season in 2020, and is set to become a free agent this offseason.

Leake spent half of the 2015 season with the Giants, posting a 4.07 ERA in nine appearances.
