The Giants hope they just brought in a gem.

Jake Jewell, a righty reliever who had started in his minor league past, has been added to the player pool and will report to the alternate site in Sacramento, the Giants announced Friday.

The 27-year-old, who was picked up from the Angels in January, essentially fills the spot Andrew Triggs lost when the Giants designated the righty for assignment. The Giants are flush with lefty bullpen options at the major league level but are thinner (comparatively) with righties. Jewell will join the likes of Rico Garcia, Tyler Cyr, Camilo Doval, Luis Madero, Trevor Oaks and Sam Wolff, along with the rehabbing Reyes Moronta, as righty arms in Sacramento.

Jewell, who has a mid-90s fastball to go with a slider and changeup, has appeared in 21 games with the Angels the last two seasons, all in relief, and has a 6.99 ERA.
