It’s a shame it was the Rockies and not the Padres opposing the Giants on Monday, as they added one more father to their lineup.
Alex Dickerson returned to the club a new dad, his wife, Jennifer, giving birth to a boy in Southern California this weekend. The couple’s first child has been named Levi Ross, according to NBC Sports’ Amy Gutierrez.
Dickerson missed just two days for paternity leave, leaving after Friday’s contest in Oakland and returning by Monday’s series opener at Oracle Park.
He’ll be batting leadoff against Colorado’s German Marquez and playing left field, his bat and glove badly missed in his absence, when Darin Ruf had to roam the outfield. If cameras capture Dickerson napping in the dugout, well, it’d be understandable.
San Francisco, which has eight games remaining in seven days and is amid a frantic wild-card hunt, entering play tied with Cincinnati and Milwaukee for the last spot, could use any offense it can get. Dickerson, who’s batting .390 with four home runs and five doubles in September, will hope his bat has not cooled off.
The Giants DFA’d Justin Smoak to make roster space for Dickerson.
The Giants scratched Chadwick Tromp from their lineup shortly before game time. They inserted Joey Bart, who has had trouble catching Johnny Cueto and whom they had planned to rest for a couple days.
No reason was stated for Tromp’s absence. The catcher had appeared to jam his shoulder diving back to first base on a pickoff try Sunday, the same shoulder he had surgery on a few years ago.
