Down nearly a quarter of their roster, the 49ers are bringing in reinforcements. Specifically at the running back position, where they will be without Raheem Mostert (knee) and Tevin Coleman (knee) for at least this weekend’s game vs. the Giants.

The 49ers are working out three running backs this week in ex-Giant Paul Perkins, Karan Higdon and Austin Walter, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson Jr. are the two healthy running backs on the active roster. It is assumed that JaMycal Hasty will be called up from the practice squad, as the team protected him on Tuesday, meaning no team can place him on their active roster before Sunday.

Of the three invitees, Perkins has the most NFL experience. A former fifth-round pick out of UCLA, Perkins played a significant role on the 2016 Giants as a rookie, earning the starting running back job by late in the year, and gaining 102 rushing yards in the regular season finale.

Perkins’ 2017 season was a disappointment, and he was waived by the Giants. He hasn’t landed a consistent NFL job since.

Walter is the other intriguing name. The Rice product had a decent training camp with the 49ers last year.
