The Giants added more than one right-handed pitcher on Wednesday. One move was just a bit louder than the other.
While Kevin Gausman agreed to the $18.9 million qualifying offer that promises he will be back in San Francisco, the Giants also brought in righty Silvino Bracho as a minor league free agent from the Diamondbacks.
Bracho, a 28-year-old from Venezuela, announced the move on Instagram. The Giants have not announced it.
Bracho has appeared in 92 big-league games with Arizona, posting a 4.82 career ERA with 94 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings. He missed the entire 2019 season after Tommy John surgery and recovered in time for a late-September appearance this season, his arm likely still building up. His fastball averaged 91.9 mph, down from 93.3 mph in 2018.
Bracho had been a solid reliever for Arizona, with a 3.19 ERA in 31 innings in 2018. He now will join a motley crew of contenders for bullpen spots, as the Giants are watching Tony Watson hit free agency and have an arbitration decision upcoming on Trevor Gott. They also will have one with Jarlin Garcia, who seems the only sure bet to be a part of the bullpen.
Otherwise, inexperienced arms like Tyler Rogers, Wandy Peralta, Caleb Baragar, Sam Selman, Rico Garcia and Shaun Anderson will be competing for spots, and the Giants are hunting for a veteran or two to anchor the unit.
