As we look ahead to the 2021 season, there is the assumption, or hope, that Nick Bosa will return healthy and remain the force he was in his rookie year. The 49ers’ entire team revolves around a dominant defensive line, and without that, there’s no clear identity for this team.

According to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, who spoke with Neal ElAttrache, the surgeon who performed surgeries on both Bosa and Solomon Thomas, both of the two suffered damage which, “was more extensive than a simple tear to the anterior cruciate ligament.”

That is obviously a concern, especially for Bosa, but also for Thomas, who is an unrestricted free agent. ElAttrache said, however, that both are expected to recover.

“They weren’t just straightforward, isolated ACL injuries,” ElAttrache said. “These were bigger injuries. But they’re both ahead of where ordinarily we’d expect them to be. And so they’re both going through their initial stages of functional performance training. So it’s looking very promising for both of those guys.”
