Giants pick up pitching prospect again and hold on to Trevor Gott

SCOTTSDALE — The Giants clearly like Jordan Humphreys, now let’s see if he can last.

The righty pitcher was picked up from the Mets in a Billy Hamilton trade Aug. 2 then sent to Sacramento but was placed on the restricted list with an undisclosed family issue. He was then forced off the roster when the Giants added four prospects ahead of the Rule 5 draft, and the Indians claimed him before designating him for assignment recently.

He’s back.

The Giants claimed the 24-year-old prospect again from Cleveland on Friday, sending Tyler Beede to the 60-day injured list in response. Beede, recovering from Tommy John surgery, is eligible to return May 31. Perhaps he can been ready sooner, but in a 162-game season in which innings will be a concern for everyone, there’s no need to rush Beede.

In an unrelated move, righty Trevor Gott cleared waivers and will stay in Giants camp. This is good news for San Francisco and Farhan Zaidi, who outlined that there was hope he would be retained and said there are some parts to Gott’s game they want to work on to “get him back on track.” Gott likely will start the season in Sacramento.

Humphreys, meanwhile, continues to be an interesting prospect. He had a huge year in 2017, when he pitched to a 1.42 ERA in 11 starts with the Mets’ Class-A affiliate, striking out 80 in 69 2/3 innings. He then was lost to Tommy John surgery, returning and pitching well in the 2019 Arizona Fall League, when he allowed one run in 11 2/3 innings.

The Mets were going all-in to contend last season and no longer had room for a prospect still a ways away from helping. They DFA’d the Florida native and needed Hamilton as outfield help.

“He had a lot of carry through the zone before Tommy John. He still has a lot of carry through the zone,” Gabe Kapler said in August about Humphreys. “He’s a strike thrower and a real prospect for the Mets, and we’re excited to have him.”

Yet again, the Giants are excited to have him.
