We all thought Marquise Goodwin’s time with the 49ers had ended last year, when he was packaged with the 210th overall pick and sent to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for the 190th pick, which became tight end Charlie Woerner.
Oh, how we were wrong. Goodwin, in a truly bizarre occurrence for which there is genuinely no comparison, reverted to the 49ers due to a reported clause in his contract. Because Goodwin opted out of the 2020 NFL season due to COVID-19 and the birth of his daughter, Marae, he never played a snap for the Eagles, that clause came into play and Goodwin was sent back to the 49ers.
According to multiple reports, Goodwin’s return cost the 49ers their seventh-round draft pick, the 238th overall. That means the trade ended up being the 49ers’ 2020 sixth (No. 210) and 2021 seventh-round (No. 238) picks for Charlie Woerner.
They will still retain the seventh-round pick, No. 228 overall, which they acquired in the Jordan Willis trade in which they sent away their 2021 sixth-round pick.
Per NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco, the 49ers released Goodwin, as expected.
