If you watched Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch’s press conference on Monday, one thing was made pretty plain; the 49ers aren’t all that interested in keeping Jimmy Garoppolo around, assuming they can get proper value for him in a trade. Shanahan said multiple times that the team traded up for a starting quarterback and declined to confirm Garoppolo would remain on the roster by this Sunday.

And unlike in the brass’ press conference at the end of March, these weren’t statement about the distant future. This was about right now, about winning with the currently constructed, competitive roster. That was a significant shift from a month ago.

It’s now been confirmed that there’s legitimacy to sentiment and the 49ers may not have Jimmy Garoppolo on their roster for much longer. According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the team is trying to move Garoppolo before or during the draft.

When you consider the construction of this roster, and the value in clearing Garoppolo’s more than $22 million in cap space, it only makes much sense if San Francisco can use the cap boon now. That probably goes for draft picks, too, with a significant gap between Pick 43 and Pick 103.
