Just over a year after losing eye in suicide attempt, Drew Robinson hits HR for River Cats

There are cool stories, and then there’s what Drew Robinson did on Tuesday evening in Las Vegas.

Robinson was centimeters away from being dead just over a year ago, when he attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head with a handgun, losing his right eye, sense of smell and taste in the process.

Miraculously, the gunshot did not kill Robinson, and over a year later, the outfielder didn’t just play well enough to make the Sacramento River Cats 2021 Triple-A squad, he’s already contributing.

In just his sixth game back in a River Cats uniform, just a few miles away from the house where he attempted suicide, Robinson smashed a a solo home run on a 1-0 fastball down the middle.

Robinson’s family was in the stands to witness the homer. Robinson pointed at them after rounding home plate.

Robinson, 29, had a cup of coffee with the Rangers and Cardinals in 2017-18 and 2019 respectively. He has yet to take an at bat for the San Francisco Giants, but if he keeps knocking balls out of the park, that could happen sooner rather than later.
