Alex Dickerson leaves Giants game with back tightness after awkward swing

The Giants welcomed back one lefty slugger on Tuesday, but then saw another leave early.

While Brandon Belt returned, Alex Dickerson was pulled as DH after one at-bat with what the Giants said was back tightness.

Dickerson’s first at-bat against the Rangers in Texas ended with an awkward-looking strikeout, in which he waved at a breaking ball and immediately hopped in the air and seemed to straighten out his back.

Any mention of “back” and “Dickerson” in the same sentence is worrisome. He has had a long history of back issues, most recently needing surgery in 2017 when he was with the Padres. His bat was never in question with San Diego, but his health eventually led to the club designating the outfielder for assignment, and the Giants pounced.

The 2021 Giants have had myriad health issues, including a right shoulder impingement that sidelined Dickerson in May. Among the hitters missing time right now are Evan Longoria, Mike Yastrzemski and Tommy La Stella, and Dickerson has been needed in the lineup.
