It’s been three years since Buster Posey’s last All-Star Game appearance, and it sounds like the wait might linger to see him in the exhibition again. Posey, an All-Star again, suffered a thumb contusion on his catching hand on Sunday and has missed three straight games.

The Giants, as KNBR’s Mark Sanchez has covered, have indicated they don’t have long-term concerns about Posey recovering from the injury, as he avoided a fracture. But, there is the reality that he’s 34 and invaluable; they will avoid rushing him to return, and with the All-Star break around the corner, it may understandably be used as a gifted healing period.

Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi hopped on KNBR on Thursday and discussed Posey’s situation. He indicated that there’s a good chance that if Posey doesn’t feel 100 percent, he may miss out on the All-Star Game as the team employs an abundance of caution. He could be put on the 10-day injured list Friday.

“We’ll see how Buster comes in tomorrow. It’s obviously still something that is bothering him,” Zaidi said. “We want to be as safe as we can be about it and tomorrow will be a big day. If we have to make a move with Buster tomorrow, it makes sense to do it if we think he’s going to be out for the weekend. If we wind up putting him on the IL tomorrow, he’d still be eligible the first day after the break.

“So if we think he’s out for the weekend, that’ll be a move that we look to make. He’s doing better; there’s still no concern this is a long-term thing, but we don’t want him to have to fight through discomfort and maybe compound that injury with something even more serious.”
